This article was written by Myf Halton, one of our inaugural Kinnane Communications Interns. As our 2022 internships come to and end, Myf, Jocelyn and Alex reflect on their time at UQ Art Museum and share some of their most memorable projects. 

Mia Boe is a descendent of the Butchulla peoples of K’gari (Fraser island) and much of her artistic practice focuses on responding to settler-colonial violence and displacement. These works are particularly concerned with transgenerational trauma and historical and ongoing police brutality toward Indigenous people.

Congratulations to the proppaNOW artist collective, who have just won the prestigious Jane Lombard Prize for Art and Social Justice, awarded for the significance and impact of their collective activities since 2003.

Angela Tiatia’s artistic practice draws attention to the damaging effects of tourism and the commodification of Great Ocean women in Western popular culture. Deeply informed by her Samoan heritage, her work has appeared in both national and international exhibitions exploring themes of identity and place.

Our former Ashby Utting Arts Administration Intern has started at the Art Museum in a new role as our Education and Public Programs Assistant.

UQ recently celebrated the launch of the new UQ Brisbane City campus at 308 Queen Street. The artworks on display at this location were carefully chosen from the UQ Art Collection to enrich the experiences of everyone using these spaces.

"Untitled No. 1-10" (1987) by Brisbane-born, New York based artist Jeff Gibson explores image culture, appropriation and subjectivity by juxtaposing black-and-white photographs with colourful screenprints. This series is part of The UQ Art Collection and has been on loan to the Griffith University Art Museum for their exhibition "Jeff Gibson: Countertypes."

We recently said goodbye to Jenna Muir, our Kinnane Endowment Curatorial Intern, as she left to join the team at Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA).

Charles Callins began painting at age 63 after spending most of his professional life as a maritime journalist. In "Moreton Bay", Callins captures the Fisherman Islands group before it was developed to form one of Australia’s largest ports.

Through "Untitled (TFABG)", artist Daniel Boyd explores a personal history that deals with colonial collecting practices and their impact on Indigenous Australians.

Since 2017, Professor Tim Dunne has stewarded UQ Art Museum as part of his portfolio as Pro-Vice Chancellor and Deputy Provost, and has also supported the Art Museum through the Kinnane Art Endowment.
