The University of Queensland has appointed Freja Carmichael as Curator of UQ Art Museum. Freja is a Ngugi woman belonging to the people of Quandamooka. With her years of curatorial experience both locally and internationally, Freja brings with her significant industry knowledge and community connections.  

For the first time ever, in 2024 UQ Art Museum have been able to offer a curatorial internship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying at UQ, thanks to the generous support of First Nations studio, Blaklash, directed by Troy Casey and Amanda Hayman. This internship provides mentorship from curators and arts professionals across Blaklash and UQ Art Museum and represents an exciting step in fostering young and emerging First Nations art professionals in Queensland.

The Ashby Utting Arts Administration internship is specifically tailored to students interested in art museum business operations. Over the course of a year, this internship offers a comprehensive learning experience, exposing interns to broad responsibilities including finance, administration, venue hire, advancement and audience engagement.

Currently displayed in the UQ Art Museum’s “Mare Amoris | Sea of Love” exhibition, the artworks inspire conversations about Indigenous water rights and challenge colonial boundaries placed upon oceans and their connected waters.

The University of Queensland has appointed Peta Rake as UQ Art Museum’s new Director. She is the fifth Director in the institution’s history and the second female leader since Honorary Professor Nancy Underhill served as UQ Art Museum’s first Director (1976-1995).

For the first time, we have offered an Access (Identified) Internship, funded by the generous Kinnane bequest we received in 2020. This opportunity has been created for a UQ student living with a disability studying Art History or Museum Studies who is passionate about access engagement in our industry. 

Spanning 5000 years of Chinese visual culture, the Nat Yuen Collection is now on display in the Gordon Greenwood Building at UQ St Lucia, home of the School of Languages and Cultures.

UQ alum Professor William Ross Johnston has made a major contribution to The University of Queensland Art Collection with his recent donation of “Nude with crossed legs” (1974) by Australian painter John Brack. The painting can be seen at Patina Alumni Court on the St Lucia campus. 

We have launched a Disability Action Plan (DAP) for UQ Art Museum, which outlines our priorities, plans and goals to ensure d/Deaf people and people with disabilities can access and enjoy the work that we do.
