Equipping Students for Employment

Each year, through the generous support of our donors, the UQ Art Museum provides opportunities for students to work on real-life projects in a world-class museum environment which equips them for employment upon graduation.

As a direct result of these opportunities, our students gain employment at leading galleries and museums across Australia and around the world, including the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the National Gallery of Singapore and the Honolulu Biennale – to name just a few.

You can help bright, creative students make their way in a highly competitive global market by supporting student training and internships.

Marcella Fox

As a recipient of a philanthropically funded 2017 Winter Research Scholarship, Marcella Fox (2018 Graduate of Bachelor Business Management and Arts) was selected from a highly competitive scholarship round to work within the UQ Art Museum, with the Advancement Manager.

During her undergraduate studies, Marcella was also awarded a Student Exchange Travel Scholarship based on her academic performance, providing her with the once in a life-time opportunity to study Art History at the University of Glasgow, Scotland and art and architecture for three weeks in Venice, Italy.

She has since acquired an internship position at the UQ Art Museum and also at the prestigious Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy, where she continues to gain industry experience.

“Thanks to the support of the UQ Art Museum’s generous donors, I have been provided with numerous invaluable opportunities, which have given me the confidence and skills necessary to expand my career to the international stage.”

These invaluable opportunities would not be possible without the generous support of the University of Queensland and its donors. By supporting the UQ Art Museum you are empowering student success and directly supporting student’s professional development and career progression - allowing them to make a change in the international art world.

Nicholas Smith

Upon graduation, Nicholas Smith (Bachelor of Arts, Art History 2015) was awarded an internship position at the prestigious Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C working with some of the most respected art museum professionals in the world. He was one of only ten interns accepted into the 2015 program and the only non-US citizen.

Nicholas’ four years of work experience at the UQ Art Museum as a volunteer, front of house staff member and public programs assistant was integral to his securing of this position.

“It’s because of my time at UQ Art Museum that I’ve been accepted into the internship program at The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C....Without the work experience to complement my studies, I’d be just another Art History graduate.”

Since returning from the US, Nicholas completed his Bachelor’s Degree, Art History (extended major) Honours and was valedictorian of his graduating class. He now works as a Gallery Assistant at Philip Bacon Galleries.

With your support, we can create opportunities for students like Nicholas to broaden their horizons through paid internships, work placements and scholarships that will set them up for exciting futures in the arts.
