The appointment of an Indigenous curator at the UQ Art Museum will allow us to look beyond traditional Western-modes of exhibition making and bring a stronger Indigenous voice and cultural perspective to our entire museum program.

The stories of Indigenous Australia must continue to be told and UQ Art Museum is passionate about using our growing collection of artwork by Indigenous artists as a vehicle to do so.  Art Museum staff already work closely with academics delivering UQ’s Contemporary Indigenous knowledge, thought and philosophy course. Together they study artworks that address colonial representations of Indigenous Australians and then contemporary self-representation by Indigenous people.

An Indigenous curator would bring an important layer of knowledge and expertise to further enhance these discussions.

However, this position would also create a new and incredibly exciting dimension to the curatorial process and visitor experience across our entire exhibition and education program by enabling visitors to experience all types of art from an Indigenous perspective.
