The Ocean Pathways initiative is a partnership between UQ Art Museum and the Art Gallery of NSW, with two dedicated appointments, one based at each institution. This series of hand-built Kinyingarra poles, "Whispers (poles)", by Megan Cope, is featured in our current exhibition "to come together as water". It replicates the formations of Cope’s living artwork "Kinyingarra Guwinyanba" (2022), created on Quandamooka Country in the intertidal zone.

As part of the “to come together as water” exhibition, a series of glass mussel shells by Yuwaalaraay artist Lucy Simpson are presented. In this video, curator Freja Carmichael shares more insight into this beautiful artwork.

The University of Queensland has appointed Freja Carmichael as Curator of UQ Art Museum. Freja is a Ngugi woman belonging to the people of Quandamooka. With her years of curatorial experience both locally and internationally, Freja brings with her significant industry knowledge and community connections.  

For the first time ever, in 2024 UQ Art Museum have been able to offer a curatorial internship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying at UQ, thanks to the generous support of First Nations studio, Blaklash, directed by Troy Casey and Amanda Hayman. This internship provides mentorship from curators and arts professionals across Blaklash and UQ Art Museum and represents an exciting step in fostering young and emerging First Nations art professionals in Queensland.

The Ashby Utting Arts Administration internship is specifically tailored to students interested in art museum business operations. Over the course of a year, this internship offers a comprehensive learning experience, exposing interns to broad responsibilities including finance, administration, venue hire, advancement and audience engagement.

The University of Queensland has appointed Peta Rake as UQ Art Museum’s new Director. She is the fifth Director in the institution’s history and the second female leader since Honorary Professor Nancy Underhill served as UQ Art Museum’s first Director (1976-1995).
