World Oceans Day with UQ Marine Social Sciences

On World Oceans Day, join us for discussions about current issues in the SEQ marine environment, and hear about the work that marine social scientists are doing to contribute to solutions. The 2022 theme for World Oceans Day is "Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean", which will guide many of our discussions. This event is open to the public and will finish in the evening with the official launch and celebration of the SEQ Marine Social Science hub by the Queensland Chief Scientist, Hugh Possingham. The SEQ hub is part of the Australian chapter of the global Marine Social Science network.

The day will be broken into sessions to allow attendees to book into as many sessions as they prefer.

This showcase is hosted in partnership with UQ Art Museum’s exhibition Oceanic Thinking, which is the inaugural exhibition of the multi-year program Blue Assembly, exploring our relationship with the ocean by gathering these “blue” approaches to research. This exhibition was created in collaboration with experts in UQ’s Centre for Marine Science.

Program

MORNING SESSION (Welcome and Panel Discussions)

  • 10am-12.30pm: Welcome and acknowledgements delivered by Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science (CBSCS) Director Dr Daniel Dunn (10-10.30am). This will be followed by two panel discussions, facilitated by Jim Walker (Lecturer, Indigenous Curriculum, Faculty of Science) (10.30-11.30am), and Dr Rebecca Olive (Honorary Senior Research Fellow, School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences) (11.30am-12.30pm).

LUNCH BREAK

  • 12.30-1.30pm: Marine Social Science Network lunch (by invitation)

BLUE ASSEMBLY SESSION and Afternoon Tea

  • 1.30-3pm: In alignment with the Oceanic Thinking exhibition at UQ Art Museum, join the artist talk by Sancintya Mohini Simpson and Isha Ram Das, followed by a tour of the exhibition by Senior Curator Peta Rake.
  • 3-3.30pm Afternoon tea served in UQ Art Museum foyer

AFTERNOON SESSION (Research Showcase)

  • 3.30-5.30pm: Research showcase (5 minute presentations on current marine social scientific research in SEQ), followed by panel discussion (How to collaborate and incorporate social science into projects and organisations)
  • 5-5.30pm: Break and networking

EVENING SESSION (Launch celebration of the SEQ Marine Science hub)

  • 5.30-6pm: Official launch of the Marine Social Science Network, with keynote speech by Prof. Hugh Possingham, FAA, Queensland Chief Scientist
  • 6-7.30pm: Networking event with drinks and appetisers in UQ Art Museum foyer
