Yirinda: Wurgu
Sat 7 Sep, UQ Art Museum (Times TBC)

Celebrated group Yirinda – featuring revered Butchulla songman Fred Leone alongside musical polymath Samuel James Pankhurst – premiere Wurgu, or “East Wind” in Butchulla, a new commission specifically for UQ’s iconic Mayne Hall pipe organ.

Situated in UQ Art Museum, this towering instrument is a dramatic stage for Yirinda’s unique blend of contemporary orchestration with the ancient, ceaseless language, storytelling and culture of the Butchulla nation. Wurgu is an exclusive one-day-only performance that will breathe new life into this historic instrument.

Wurgu by Yirinda is part of the Brisbane Festival 2024 program and will include two performances.
